Detroit Water, Sewerage Dept Cites Nearly 80 People for Running Water Illegally

Posted: Updated:

The City of Detroit says it cited 79 customers for illegal water use over a three-day period.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is going after tens of thousands of nonpaying residential and business customers.

The department spokesman says it's trying to collect about $90 million from about 90,000 delinquent accounts.

The water department deputy director says the average delinquent bill is $560.

First time offenders will pay a $250 fee for running water illegally. The second offense carries a fee of $500 and customers will have to pay $660 for a third offense. The department says customers must first pay the fee in full before a payment plan can be set up for service to be restored.

United Nations experts and protesters say disconnecting the water is a violation of civil rights.
