Creating Yummy Treats at Kids Make and Bake

Posted: Updated:

Today and tonight, the fun and games are dedicated to the kids; from games to face painting to baking pies.

9&10's Brittany Wright takes us to one event that draws hundreds of families to every year.

For 10 years, the Make and Bake event has brought smiles to kids' faces.

The entire day, kids have been putting their baking skills to work in hopes of making the best cherry pie.

And it wasn't just the pie that was so great, but the memories they took away from it.

"I made some pies with my family. We had a lot of fun."

Four hundred kids and 250 pounds of cherries made up the National Cherry Festival's Kids Make and Bake event today.

"The trick is just kind of covering up all the cherries in the dough and then it just looks really good."

Aaron Trierweiler is visiting from California with his family. He says making a cherry pie at the festival has become a family tradition.

"My favorite part of doing something like this is spending time with my family and just having fun."

And organizers say that's exactly why they have been putting on the event for 10 years.

"The kids absolutely adore it, it just feels good, you know it's a great way to promote the festival, it's a great way to promote cherries and it's a great way to say to the community thank you for their support," explained Denise Busley of the Grand Traverse Pie Company.

And Denise says she can't wait to do it all over again next year. "The smiling faces and the thank yous that we receive and that kids were lined up before we got here to set-up saying they come from Florida every year and this is the thing they want to do."

Every donation given at the event is going straight to the Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center to prevent child abuse.
