People Travel From All Over To Attend National Cherry Festival

Posted: Updated:
The 88th National Cherry Festival is up and running in Traverse City.

Hundreds of thousands of people will be visiting the Cherry Capital over the next week.

They come from all over the country to be a part of the fun.

"We've heard about the Cherry festival for years and unfortunately never made it until now," said Betsy Donovan, tourist.

Betsy Donovan traveled all the way from California to attend her first National Cherry Festival.

"It's definitely a surprise to me how absolutely gorgeous Traverse City," said Donovan. "I think that it's a great deal of fun."

On Friday, vendors said the eight day festival really helps business.

"We double our sales in the store plus we have our tent sales, so it's probably a quadruple if not quintuple for the next eight days," said Julie Millen, Benjamin Twiggs Owner.

Benjamin Twiggs sells local cherry products and has been attending the National Cherry Festival for more than 40 years.

Millen said it's what she looks forward to all year long.

"The people are happy and they're having a great time. We don't get grumpy people, we get happy people and it's so much fun to be around them," said Millen.

And of course the day wouldn't be complete without something cherry.

"We started eating cherries that's for sure and we're going to have plenty of cherries before we leave," said Donovan.

Organizers say the festival is not only important for tourism, but for the city's culture.

"It's a part of the fabric of our community and so it's great to have the tourists in town helping celebrate with us, but there's a lot of memories being made right here for local kids and that's really what its all about," said Trevor Tkach, the National Cherry Festival's Executive Director.

The Fourth of July fireworks along the bay will take place tonight beginning at 10:30 pm.
