AG Schuette Amends Complaint Against Chesapeake Energy

Posted: Updated:

An update on a case involving racketeering and fraud in Northern Michigan.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an amended complaint in the state's second case against Chesapeake Energy. It now includes 12 more victims bringing a total of 20 charges of false pretenses.

Representatives from Chesapeake appeared Wednesday in Cheboygan District Court.

The company is accused of convincing landowners to lease them land back it 2010, promising mortgages would not be an issue.

But once competition in the area stopped, the company had nearly every lease cancelled. Schuette says that meant competitors couldn't lease the land.

Chesapeake is also accused of breaking anti-trust laws.

The company will be back in court in August.
