A teen is recovering from his injuries after he was ran over by a car in Mecosta County.

The accident happened near the intersection of Colburn and Gilbertson Roads in Big Rapids early Thursday morning.

Big Rapids Police say the 16-year-old was hit by a car. According to police, he was laying unconscious in the road before he was hit.

The driver told police that he ran over something, not knowing what it was, and stopped. He then realized he had ran over a person.

The teenager was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital then transferred by Aero Med to a Grand Rapids hospital due to the extent of his injuries. Police say he has broken bones and possible internal injuries.

Police say the driver had not been drinking, but alcohol was found in the teen. Police believe lack of lighting in the area may have also contributed to the accident.

Big Rapids Police say charges are not expected against the driver. As far as the teen, his health is their main priority.
