Coal Ash Use Bills Signed by Governor Snyder

Posted: Updated:

New Michigan laws allowing cement and asphalt to use of coal ash and other industrial byproducts were signed by Governor Rick Snyder Tuesday.

The coal ash is a byproduct of coal combustion. They say it poses environmental threats if left in landfills. To lessen economic waste and support a better environment, the ash will be recycled for use in roads and parking lots.

The new laws allows groups to use the ash for beneficial purposes as long as they follow the rules pertaining to storage.

Those against the bills say the environment and residents are at risk, but those for it say coal ash can be safely encapsulated.
