Fire at Oaks Correctional Facility Warehouse

Posted: Updated:
No one was hurt in a small fire at a Northern Michigan prison complex earlier this evening.

The Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee says their warehouse had a small fire.

An employee noticed smoke coming from the building around 5:00 this afternoon and called 9-1-1. The fire was contained to the back of the building, and no inmates were affected. Most of the damage was caused by water and smoke. The warehouse contains the laundry operation and supplies for the facility.

"No prisoners were ever in danger, this building is separate from the facility as a whole, it's at the end of the day so all staff were out," says Eric Smith, Oaks Correctional Facility wardens administrative assistant.

The fire is not suspicious. The prison called in a fire marshal to investigate the cause, as they conduct their own investigation.
