Family, friends, and the community Ivan "Bubba" Hartman protected are mourning.

The Sault Ste. Marie police officer passed away following a battle with leukemia.

Now, friends and co-workers are fondly remembering the veteran officer from the Soo.

Bubba worked for the police department for twenty five years. He retired in February, and doctors diagnosed him with leukemia soon after that.

Sault Ste. Marie city police chief John Riley remembers meeting "Bubba" for the first time.

"I wasn't introduced to him, he came into my office and introduced himself to me! He was very strong, but very friendly. Always smiled and if you talked to the public that he dealt with, that's how they saw him as well."

Visitation is this Friday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Clark Bailey-Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie.

The funeral service is Saturday at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Burial information is still unknown at this time.
