Debate Heating Up Over Traverse City Fluoridation Program

Posted: Updated:
Tap water in one Northern Michigan city is causing debate as not everyone want to continue to add a potentially dangerous chemical.

The debate is over Traverse City's fluoridation program, a program that has been in effect for over 50 years.

A news conference was held to stress why the program should continue on Friday. Everyone from dentists to the mayor attended the event to show their support.

Dentists argue putting fluoride in the water decreases tooth decay, hardens teeth, and helps in the development of teeth.

Those against the program argue the issue should be voted on by the people and commissioners should take a closer look at what is going in the water.

A commissioner raised the issue after having some concerns about the program, now the board will vote on the issue. The vote is scheduled for Monday.

9&10's Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jared Barraco spoke to both sides about the issue.
