President Obama: U.S. Will Review Options to Support Iraqi Government

Posted: Updated:

President Obama spoke about the developing crisis in Iraq Friday afternoon.

A fast moving Islamic rebellion in Iraq is posing the biggest threat to the country's stability since the withdrawal of U.S troops back in 2011.

Sunni militants are continuing their progress toward Iraq's capitol.

The Al-Qaeda inspired fighters have captured two new towns north of Baghdad, and are roughly 60 miles outside the city.

The insurgents, known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, have vowed to destroy Shiite mosques and shrines.

The Iraqi prime minister has called on the U.S for help. President Obama addressed the crisis at the White House in a press conference Friday.

"We will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq, but I have asked my national security team to prepare a range of other options that could help support Iraq security forces and I'll be reviewing those options in the days ahead."
