USCG Investigating Bios Blanc Island Ferry Collision

Posted: Updated:
The Coast Guard is investigating a collision between an island ferry and a tugboat pulling a barge.

Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie tells Northern Michigan's News Leader the accident happened around 8:55 Thursday morning.

The Bois Blanc Island Ferry, the Kristen D, and a tug pushing a barge side-swiped each other.

Ryan McLaren, Captain of the Bois Blanc Island Ferry, said "We were out in the fog and had a collision with a tug barge in heavy fog, a really unfortunate accident that could have been much worse. We're just lucky that it wasn't as bad as it really could have been and we're thankful for that."

No one was hurt, and neither vessel received any major damage.

Both are running today, but exactly how the collision happened is still under investigation.
