Healthy Living: Calculating the Risk of Heart Failure

Posted: Updated:

More than five-million Americans have heart failure. This serious condition often carries a grim prognosis.

In fact more than half will die within five years of diagnosis. Now there's a new way to calculate a heart patient's likely outcome.

You just need a few minutes and a phone.

To develop the risk calculator, researchers studied more than 2,000 patients with advanced heart failure and looked at 39 factors that offered insight about a patient's outcome.

They determined just four of these were the most predictive of patient survival over five years.

They also discovered that these same variables were accurate predictors for both men and women.
