Time To Taper Before The Big Race

Posted: Updated:

Just two more weeks of training to go until hundreds take on the Bayshore races.

Last week runners experienced peak week, their toughest training regime yet. Some finished 20 miles.

This week was all about tapering, or cutting back in a big way to give muscles a break.

Running coaches say tapering will not get someone out of shape, it just refreshes the body.

They say for anyone taking on such a long distance, this is a crucial part of the process.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense but there is a method to the madness. The taper should be interesting. It's just kinda the anticipation of kinda cutting back on the miles and then getting ready for the race in a couple weeks," said runner Jeff Livingston.

Bayshore in Training coach Allison says, "taper time is here! Tapering is often classified as a reduction of training volume (decrease in mileage) at the end of a training cycle. Tapering helps to rebuild and refresh the body prior to race day so your body will be at it's peak ability when you toe the line.

"It is important to remember while you are taper that is will not cause you to "get out of shape" before your race. Tapering is a vitally important aspect of training so enjoy your rest and recovery as you get ready to race!"
