Boy Recovering From Near Drowning

Posted: Updated:
A Manistee County boy is recovering after nearly drowning over the weekend.

Owen Skalandis, who is autistic, nearly drowned on Saturday afternoon near the River Side Marina.

The child's caretaker called 9-1-1 to report the 10-year-old was in the river. When first responders arrived, they found the boy about 150 yards down the river, face down and unresponsive.

Fire Captain Mark Cameron jumped in the water and helped pull Owen to shore. The pair were pulled to land by the help of police and fire crews.

Owen was given CPR and taken to DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

His grandmother says she is so thankful that he was rescued. As far as his condition, she says he is making progress, and is expected to come home sometime this week.

9&10's Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jacob Johnson spoke with Captain Cameron about the rescue.
