Shepler's Ferry Begins Moving Freight, Horses To, From Mackinac Island

Posted: Updated:

An update on the struggle of getting ferries to and from Mackinac Island.

While the Coast Guard was guiding ships through the Straits today, Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry made its first trip from St. Ignace over to the island.

It was the first time in the history of the business that they were the first boat to the island.

Today, they loaded more freight and moved much-needed horses over to the island.

"We made it to Mackinac Island which was a great accomplishment seeing the ice is anywhere form 2.5 feet to 3 feet in some spots. We'll be hauling horses throughout all day tomorrow and of course the not so beautiful part of it we'll be hauling dumpsters tonight," said Shepler's President Chris Shepler.

Shepler's ferry service will making trips throughout the night shuttling freight and picking up dumpsters of trash.

They say they hope to have a schedule out soon for passengers, but right now travel times vary too much because of the ice to make a regular schedule.
