New, Elaborate Scam Discovered in Clare County

Posted: Updated:
The scam involves a caller posing as the IRS and an accomplice impersonating a sheriff's deputy in person.

Clare County Sheriff John Wilson says the family believed the scam and took the suspects to their bank in Clare last week.

The caller tells the victim they owe money or face being arrested but could have it all cleared if they drove with the faux officer to the bank to pay the bills.

The sheriff says police do not collect money in any situation.

The sheriff's department says you can call 9-1-1 to verify if a real department car is at your house.

9&10 News' Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Jacob Johnson spoke with the sheriff about the elaborate scam and have more details.
