Fire Destroys 8 Units In Kalkaska Co. Apartment Complex

Posted: Updated:

The Kalkaska Township Fire Chief Derek Hogerheide tells Northern Michigan's News Leader that the call went out at about 1:30 Thursday afternoon for a structure fire

Hogerheide says flames were through the roof when Fire crews arrived to Sandy Pines Apartment Complex. One building is affected and 8 apartments are a total loss. 16 apartments were in this building.

The department called for more help and the Grand Traverse rural ladder truck has been a big help putting flames out from above.

Crews are still putting out hot spots and will be here for hours doing that. They don't know a cause or origin yet.

They say it is not suspicious. Fire investigator has been on scene but can't get in yet to make a decision.

16 people lost their homes and either taken to the hospital or the Kalkaska Township Hall. The American Red Cross will help those who need it.

There have been no serious injuries or deaths. Only minor smoke inhalation.

People were still inside when  crews arrived on scene but say people helped get others out who were in wheelchairs. It's been a community effort to feed the fire crews and try to get those displaced cared for.
