Northern Michigan Mail Carrier Comes to the Aid of an Elderly Woman

Posted: Updated:

Daniel Thorne has been a mail carrier for nearly 20 years. He says it's a natural part of the job to notice things. He says you pick up on people's routines and get to know everyone in the community.

Thorne was on his daily route last week, when he noticed something was off. A 95-year-old woman he brings mail to the door for, wasn't there. He says when he knocked, she hollered from inside the house that she needed help.

When Thorne went inside the woman was on the floor, where she was bruised and in pain. He asked her how long she had been there, and she says it was dark out when she fell. Thorne came to her aid around 10 a.m., so she had been there a while.

The mail carrier helped the woman up, and waited with her until family could get to her. She was checked out, and Thorne says he's happy to hear she is at home safe and sound.

Thorne says he wasn't trying to be a hero, he was just helping the best way he could. But those who see him day to day, delivering mail, say he goes above and beyond.

9&10's Alyssa Gambla and photojournalist Erin Malone followed Thorne on his route to hear his story.
