Sugar Islanders Prepare for the Worst

Posted: Updated:

The Coast Guard says when ships come through and break the ice, island communities will be impacted as it comes down St. Mary's River.

Today, the Sugar Island Ferry had open water to run on schedule. But Islanders know this could always change, and are preparing themselves for the worst this week.

The Ferry Captain says they keep in contact with the USCG so they know when to expect the ice, but it's hard to say when the ferry will be running or not.

Today Islanders said people are busy stocking up on groceries and essentials, in case the ferry can't run this week. They say it's just part of living on the island, and they do the best the can to prepare.
