Manistee Co. Former Coach Accused Of Sex Crimes

Posted: Updated:

A former Northern Michigan assistant track coach is accused of soliciting sex from his student athletes.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette authorized the charges today against Tyler Groenwald.

He used to be a coach for Onekama Middle School, and volunteered for the Bear Lake Cross Country team.

Police first received a complaint about Groenwald in 2013 from a former student athlete.

The student told investigators Groenwald tried to solicit sex from him, and requested inappropriate photos via text message.

The Attorney General, Michigan State Police and the Manistee County Sheriff's Department teamed up for the investigation and found there are other likely victims.

 Groenwald turned himself in today.

He'll likely be formally charged next week.
