21 crashes in one day, and the number keeps growing.

It's been a busy day for the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department.

Of the 21 crashes, 13 of them happened on US-31 in Acme Township.

Deputies say the blowing and drifting snow, and icy conditions caused several cars to collide.

The US-31 scene near the Bunker Hill Road intersection was cleared and moved into a parking lot.

In this accident a semi truck, several cars, and a minivan were involved, most had to be towed away.

Deputies say one driver had to be taken to the hospital.

When she got out of her car, she was struck by another.

Captain Randy Fewless of the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department says, "Sometimes you're going to need to get out of your vehicle but circumstances like that where the visibility is so low it's good to make that phone call from inside your vehicle and let emergency personnel respond to the scene that way the traffic that is still there it can be dealt with safely."

Deputies are still handling crashes all over the area due to this blowing snow.

They're advising people to avoid roads with open areas where visibility is low.
