The Kmart store in Petoskey will be closing in early June of this year, meaning 45 local jobs will be lost.

The store has been open since the 1970's.

The Chamber of Commerce says this will definitely impact the community with 45 people looking for jobs, and the difficulty of trying to find another store to fill such a big space.

Kmart says the story will be open until early June, and liquidation will begin March 16. The company tells 9&10 News store closures like this are part of the company's continued actions to reduce expenses, and transform their business model.

The Chamber of Commerce says while it always causes a ripple effect when a large store closes, people have other options.

They say the hospitality industry is always looking for people, especially as summer approaches. The Chamber of Commerce and Northwest Michigan Works say there is a strong need for welders, manufacturing employees and skilled trades.

9&10's Alyssa Gambla and Erin Malone have more details on how the store closing impacts the community.
