Hook and Hunting: Winter Free Fishing Weekend

This weekend, everyone in Michigan can fish without a license. 

From Saturday, February 15 to Sunday, February 16 residents and non-residents can fish for free.

All other fishing regulations still apply, however. 

Several events are happening this weekend to celebrate the Winter Free Fishing Weekend to promote Michigan's world-class fishing opportunities. 

Here's a few events happening in Northern Michigan:

Waterways Ice Festival at Mullett Lake Marina (Cheboygan County)
Feb. 15, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This event features an ice-fishing contest and several other activities to provide families with an opportunity to enjoy/try ice fishing at little or no cost. There is an entry fee of $7.50 per person or $15 per family. All proceeds go to selected organized youth groups in Cheboygan County.

Catch Us if You Can (Roscommon County)
Higgins Lake, Houghton Lake, Lake St. Helen
Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16 All day, each day
Catch a tagged fish in any of the three lakes listed above during the 2014 Winter Free Fishing Weekend and you will receive a $50 gas card and be entered into a drawing for $100,000 and a new boat package. Plus, all anglers who catch a tagged fish will receive a special prize!

3rd Annual Ryan Williams Perch Derby (Oceana County)
Pentwater Lake (560 S. Hancock Street, Pentwater)
Saturday, February 15  7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
 In this contest kids are separate from adults. Please note kids are not eligible for adult prizes. Adult prizes will consist of cash or gear. This is a perch derby with a added total measurement of five perch determined by the angler. Each angler must determine the five fish to measure before they come to the weigh in table. Please note there is a registration fee for this event, $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

The next Free Fishing Weekend will take place June 7 and 8. 

Winter Free Fishing Weekend has been celebrated every year since 1994.
