Frozen Pipes Causing Many Issues Including Grayling House Fire

Posted: Updated:

The fire at a home in Grayling started as the city's Department of Public Works tried to thaw frozen pipes.

The fire chief tells 9&10 News pipes running under the house were attached to the floor joists.

While the DPW was trying to thaw them out, the floor joists caught fire. Now the question is, who is to blame. City residents are supposed to run their water to avoid frozen pipes between their home and the water main.

City workers helped the homeowner, Jerry McClain, get out safely.

To say it's been a hard week for McClain is an understatement. Family says his wife died last week, then last night he had to escape his burning home.

We tried to get a comment on the fire from the Grayling city manager, but he would not talk to 9&10 News.

9&10's Katie Boomgaard and photojournalist Jeff Blevins talked with neighbors about the fire and what they learned from it.
