Annual White Pine Stampede Begins Saturday

Posted: Updated:

The finish line is ready at Shanty Creek for the Annual White Pine Stampede this weekend.

The resort in Bellaire anticipates more than 500 cross-country skiers to participate in Saturday's activities.

The race began in 1977, and in the past, they've had more skiers. They think this cold, harsh winter may be keeping people away.

The Stampede starts in Mancelona tomorrow and finishes at Shanty Creek's Summit Village.

There are events for every skier, from a 10K to a 50K marathon.

Race Director Jack McKaig says, "we're not getting involved in other aspects. We're not turning this into some type of festival. All we want to do is have a nice race so people can come up here and have a good time on a gorgeous weekend this weekend, and cross country ski."

If you're still interested in signing up, you can tonight, or tomorrow
