Fire Depts. Urge People to Keep Hydrants Clear

Posted: Updated:

During the winter, fire crews face enough challenges, and finding a fire hydrant shouldn't be one of them.

The Cadillac Fire Department says a hydrant is the first thing they look for when they pull up to a fire.

If it is covered by a snow pile, they have to look for the hydrant, then dig it out, costing them valuable time.

"If you notice that your hydrants are covered under a significant amount of snow or are not clearly marked, I'd get a hold of your local unit of government and make them aware," says Anthony Wolff, the fire marshal.

The fire marshal recommends that businesses also make sure their private plow companies aren't covering hydrants when moving snow.
