School District and Parents Weigh in on School Closures

Posted: Updated:

Heavy winds and snow has caused school closures all across Northern Michigan this week. But some areas say it's not necessary, at least not yet.

Petoskey Public Schools say a lot of factors weigh into deciding on a snow day. The wind chill, roads, visibility and children's safety are all important.

The schools send people out to look at the roads early in the morning around 4 a.m., before they make the call to cancel school. The district says this morning the wind and roads were not bad enough to call a snow day.

Some parents are unhappy about their kids having to go to school this week. And some say day-of notice is too late to make arrangements for child care.

9&10's Alyssa Gambla and photojournalist Erin Malone spoke to the district and parents about classes not being canceled.
