One Step Closer To Increased Protection For Sleeping Bear Dunes

Posted: Updated:

A priceless northern Michigan treasure is moving one step closer to earning more protection.

Tuesday, legislation to protect the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore moved from the House Committee on Natural Resources. It now will go on to the House for final vote.

9&10 News spoke with Representative Dan Benishek. He introduced the measure about what kinds of protections are included in the plan.

Dr. Benishek says, "this bill allows local input from the community. And makes sure areas of the park are going to remain open to the public, and limits the ability of the government to close off areas. And makes sure boats can get to the beach, county roads will stay open, and historic areas stay open."

More than a million people visited the Sleeping Bear Dunes in 2011, bringing in about $120 million in local spending and supporting local jobs.
