Most Michigan Students Not Reading At Grade Level

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The latest Kids Count numbers are in.

A new report shows 69% of all Michigan students are not reading at grade level.

The Kids Count data, from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, shows 81% of Michigan children from low-income families are not reading at a proficient level compared with 56% from higher-income families.

Also, Michigan is one of six states that did not make progress in reading in the last ten years.

Nationally, the gap has grown, but Michigan's reading proficiency has stayed the same.
