UPDATE: Robert Caldwell was formally charged in a Grand Traverse County courtroom Tuesday morning via video from the Leelanau County jail.

Caldwell is serving time for violating his probation on an unrelated misdemeanor charge.

Judge Michael Haley charged Caldwell with involuntary manslaughter, discharge of a firearm while under the influence causing death, felony firearm, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.

Bond was set at $500,000 and a preliminary examination has been scheduled for February 11, 2014.

A Traverse City man is now charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deadly shooting of his girlfriend, Monica Anderson.

Robert Caldwell told police he accidentally shot and killed her in an attempt to take his own life.

It happened in November in the couple's apartment on Aero Park Drive in Traverse City.

The prosecutor's office says there was not enough evidence to prove the death of his girlfriend was planned.

They also say there is nothing to discredit Caldwell's claim that Anderson's death was an accident.

Caldwell was also charged with having a gun while drinking, being a felon with a gun and obstructing an officer during the investigation.

Grand Traverse Prosecutor Bob Cooney says Caldwell is scheduled to be formally charged Tuesday morning via video.
