Fire Destroys Baumann's Superette Grocery Store

A popular grocery store is gone and its 10 employees without work after a fire destroyed the business.
The huge fire happened Wednesday night at Baumann's Superette or IGA store in Rosebush in Isabella County.
More than five fire departments were needed to get the fire under control.

According to the cashier who was working before the fire started, she noticed the back half of the store filling up with smoke and quickly helped get everyone out of the store including customers.
The cashier says she cut the gas as she left and called 911.
Shortly after the call, the first fire crew arrived, but flames were already shooting out of the roof.

Fire Chief Matt Kampf says they made an attack on the back end right where the fire was, and eventually called in Mt. Pleasant with their aerial and knocked it down with that.
The chief says there was no risk of explosion during the fire.

The business is considered a complete loss.

It is not clear what caused the fire at this time, but the fire chief believes it started in the back compressor room.

Those who frequented the store say it was a staple in the community and they're sad to see it destroyed.
The owner says he plans to rebuild as soon as possible.
