Judge Exonerates Man Convicted of Arson

Posted: Updated:

A judge dismissed all charges against a man convicted of arson back in 2009 in a Wexford County circuit courtroom.

Victor Caminata was exonerated on Wednesday morning in Cadillac.

Caminata was convicted of arson back in 2009. Police believed he intentionally started a fire at a home he shared with his girlfriend at the time.

He was sentenced to nine to 40 years in prison.

In 2011, the Michigan Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan took on the case and found the state committed errors in the investigation.

The information presented led a judge to vacate the conviction last year, after Caminata spent four years in prison and one year in jail.

Caminata had been out since July waiting for retrial.

With the case behind him, Caminata plans to make up lost time with his children, family, and friends.

9&10's Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jacob Johnson were in court and spoke to Caminata.
