New Helicopter Landing Pad Opens In Near Ludington Hospital

Posted: Updated:

Patients now have a faster way to get medical help in Mason County with the opening of a new landing pad.

The dedication and first fly-in by Aeromed, an air ambulance service, happened Wednesday afternoon.

The new pad is considered a "helistop," which means it is a designated area for safe helicopter landings and take-offs. The area does not have other features that make it a "helipad" or "heliport."

The new landing pad was officially opened Wednesday near Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital's Emergency Department.

Until now, the hospital's air ambulance flights came in and out of the Ludington Airport. That meant patients would have to travel between the hospital and helicopter by ambulance.

This move speeds up the process to get people the treatment they need.

Wednesday, a donation of $50,000 was presented by hospital volunteers.

It's the first payment of a $125,000 pledge to the Spectrum Health Ludington's expansion project.
