Cold Weather Could Help Great Lakes Water Levels

Posted: Updated:

The bitter cold may be unbearable at times, but it may actually be helping Great Lakes water levels.

A scientific report released Tuesday says the rising and falling water levels are influenced by evaporation, rain and snowfall, but as the climate warms, the levels are becoming harder to understand and predict.

The report also said this winter's cold weather is creating ice on areas of the lake that will reduce evaporation and keep water temperatures cool into the summer.

An expert says that should help water levels rebound.
