Meetings Scheduled to Discuss Keeping Asian Carp Out of the Great Lakes

Posted: Updated:

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Federal officials will hold two meetings this week to discuss possible ways to prevent Asian carp from reaching Lake Michigan through Chicago waterways.

One of those meetings will be right here in northern Michigan.

The first meeting takes place Tuesday in Ann Arbor, then on Thursday a public meeting will be held in Traverse City.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps released a report with 8 alternatives for stopping the movement of the invasive species.

The most expensive proposal would place structures in Chicago rivers and canals to seal off the waterways.

It would cost an estimated 15 to 18 billion dollars and take 25 years to complete.
