Farmers Make Some Changes For Cattle in the Cold

Posted: Updated:

Livestock have to bear the cold conditions through the entire winter, but farmers do make some changes to make sure their animals stay healthy.

According to Bosscher Dairy Farm in Mcbain, feed is the main thing to keeping all the cattle alive and well through the cold weather. The feed actually helps increase the cows energy levels because their body uses more energy to ward off the cold.

They also keep a close eye on their milk cows for frostbite and the newborn calves.

Buckley Green Cattle Farm near Buckley also believes feed helps keep the animals going in the cold.

The owner says the cows have some natural instincts to crowd together as well.

9&10's Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jacob Johnson spoke with both farms about how they keep the animals safe in the cold.
