Flint on Track For Least Homicides Since 2009

FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- The city of Flint is on track to have its lowest number of homicides since 2009.

The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/19XXtg7 ) that as of Monday there were 52 homicides in the city, down from a record high of 67 in 2012.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton credits in part the presence of about 40 Michigan State Police troopers either patrolling the streets or working in the detective bureau. He says additional prosecutors funded by the Distressed Cities Initiative also are a factor.

Efforts to reduce violence were stepped up after 66 homicides in 2010 broke a more than two-decade high. There were 57 homicides in 2011.

Mayor Dayne Walling says the decrease in homicides "is a promising sign because it means fewer families are being affected by this horrible violence."
