From selfies to hashtags - social media lingo took over our vocabulary this year.

Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie released their list of banned words for 2014.

Topping the list are "selfies," "twerk/twerking," "Mr. Mom," and "twittersphere."

The list of banished words has been around since 1975.

This year alone, the school took in more than 2,000 nominations of overused or annoying words.
