Kalkaska Co. Sheriff Reminds Snowmobilers on How to Stay Safe

Posted: Updated:

The Kalkaska County Sheriff is reminding people about how to be safe while snowmobiling.

Always know the route, pay attention to signs, and use extra caution in busy areas. Make sure you tell people where and when you are riding.

Also, snowmobiles should be well maintained and riders should wear warm clothes and a helmet.

The sheriff says the two biggest factors the department sees in most crashes can be prevented.

"Speed is the number one. Followed by the drinking and usually the two are in combination when you have a serious accident," said Sheriff Dave Israel.

The sheriff also says you should use hand signals. Do not overload a snowmobile with too many passengers.
