Emmet Co. Woman Gets Knee Surgery As Gift From Operation Walk USA

Posted: Updated:

Doctors at an Emmet County hospital gave one Petoskey woman an early Christmas present.

McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey did Kristine Gates' knee surgery for free.

It's all a part of "Walk USA." Operation Walk USA an organization that provides knee and hip replacement to those who wouldn't get help otherwise.

Gates says she's thankful to have the surgery.

From anesthesia to physical therapy, it's all a gift.

Kristine says, "You can't express what a gift this is. My knee was bowing out and going crooked and my mobility was really bad. It was hard to get out of a car. All those things that I like to do like hiking, biking, kayaking, bowling, all of those things, I couldn't do anymore."

Doctors participating in the program say it serves as a reminder of why they got into medicine... to simply help people.
