Hook and Hunting: Stay Safe On The Ice This Season

Posted: Updated:

The bitter cold is good news for avid ice fishers.

The early season can be very productive if you can find good ice that's about five inches thick.

The first ice is usually safer than the later ice which is often less than solid.

While it's important to check ice conditions -- it's just as important that you're dressed for the frigid cold temperatures.

Owner of Streamside Orvis, Dave Leonhard says "you need to be cautious and so yes, the Coast Guard would suggest a life jacket underneath your warm weather gear. I always think it's a good idea to have a stick or a pole of some kind to probe the ice a little bit or prod the ice and see just how thick, or how safe it is."

You can always check with the DNR and Coast Guard to see what ice conditions are like in your area.
