UPDATE: Police Question Caldwell About Deadly Shooting

Posted: Updated:

9&10 News has some new details Friday morning on the deadly shooting in Traverse City that killed a young mother.

Police say Bobby Caldwell told them he accidentally shot Monica Anderson in their Traverse City Apartment while trying to take his own life.

Friday morning, police are questioning Caldwell about that night.

He is in the Leelanau County Jail -- being held on a parole violation stemming from an impaired driving sentence.

Police say Caldwell calls Anderson his fiancé.

Her two children were home at the time of the shooting.

They say Caldwell called 9-1-1 after he shot Anderson -- and didn't threaten police when they arrived.

But he did walk toward a back door -- which is when he shot himself in the hand.

Caldwell is currently on suicide watch.

Meanwhile, Monica's funeral is 1:00 PM Saturday at Strongheart Center in Peshabestown.

Police have arrested the man involved in the shooting in Traverse City that left one woman dead on an unrelated charge.

Thursday morning, officers arrested Robert Caldwell on a bench warrant out of Leelanau County.

Court documents show Caldwell missed probation meetings stemming from an impaired driving offense this summer.

While Caldwell is in the Leelanau County Jail tonight, Traverse City police say they are continuing to question Caldwell about Anderson's death.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex on Three Mile and Aero Park Drive.

When officers arrived, police say Caldwell tried to run out the back door and accidentally shot himself in the hand.

Monica has two young children who are now in the care of other family members.

A memorial fund has been set up at Member's Credit Union in Traverse City - it's called the "Monica June Anderson Memorial" and the funds will be used for funeral expenses as well as helping her children through this difficult time.

The family will be holding visitation at the Anderson home tomorrow afternoon. Monica's funeral will take place Saturday at 2 pm at the Strongheart Center in Peshawbestown.

9&10's Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson were on the scene Wednesday. They continued to follow the police investigation every step of the way today, and spoke to some of Monica's family members as they mourn the loss of their funny and kind-hearted loved one.
