Traverse City Police arrested a man who they say was trying to cause an explosion inside his apartment.

Officers were called out to Bay Hill Apartments around 12:30am, where the man told officers he had opened up all of the gas burners on his stove on purpose, believing his apartment would fill with gas, ignite and cause the complex to explode.

Firefighters were able to turn off the gas to the complex and clear out what had filled inside.

The man is in the Grand Traverse County Jail waiting to be charged. He will also undergo a mental evaluation.

But Bay Hill management and the man's neighbor's didn't find out about what happened until hours after police made an arrest.

9&10's Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson were on the scene and spoke to people who said they're in complete shock someone would want to cause that kind of damage.
