Farmers Take Mid-Michigan Cover Crop Tour

Posted: Updated:

A number of local farmers and land owners learned about a special kind of crop during the Mid-Michigan Cover Crop Tour.

The tour made several stops to farms across Lake, Osceola, and Mecosta Counties on Wednesday.

The field tour looked at cover crops, which are planted after a cash crop and before next years cash crop. Cover crops help keep living plant material on the ground, keep the soil active, and keep the biology underneath the soil working throughout the growing year.

The goal is to get interested farmers to plant cover crops next year with the help of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Michigan State University Extension.
