TC Mayor Speaks Out After Drunk Driving Arrest

Posted: Updated:

Traverse City Mayor Michael Estes spoke out this morning after his recent drunk driving arrest.

But 9&10 News learned this is not the mayor's first time getting caught drunk driving.

Estes was arrested one week ago after police say he failed sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test. His blood alcohol content was .12%. The legal limit in Michigan is .08%.

With his wife, Rhonda, by his side Mayor Estes apologized for his actions and said he vows to become a better person and never make a similar mistake again. He said his number one goal is to improve himself as a person.

He says he understands forgiveness from the community and those he hurt will have to be earned.

Estes will be arraigned in the 86th district court on November 4th, but says he hopes to still attend the scheduled City Commission meeting that night. Voters head to the polls the following day, with his name still in the ballot.

He said anyone who cast an absentee ballot and already voted for him is allowed to see the clerk and cast a new vote. If he has made someone change their mind he is truly sorry.

Estes said he will not answer any questions about this incident now or in the future except what is required by law.

9&10's Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson spent the afternoon downtown hearing from voters who will head to the polls in just six days.
