Leelanau Co. Police, NPS Investigating School Lake Outhouse Bomb

Posted: Updated:

An early morning explosion destroyed a restroom at a boat launch on National Park property in Leelanau County.

The explosion happened early Sunday morning in Cleveland Township, at the School Lake boat launch.

Deputies say the person who called 911 said the explosion shook their home.

The restroom was found destroyed nearly two miles from that man's home.

State police and FBI bomb technicians were called to the scene.

They believe a bomb was placed in or next to the bathroom, causing the blast. Destruction of government property and manufacturing of explosives are serious felony offences.

The damage is estimated to be $14,000.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office at 231-256-8800 or National Park Service Chief Ranger Phil Akers at 231-326-5135.

9&10's Marisa McKay and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson spoke to the chief ranger handling the case to see where the investigation stands tonight.
