Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Opens After Government Shutdown

Posted: Updated:

National Parks right here in Northern Michigan are open today after the partial government shutdown.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was closed 16 days.

Park employees opened buildings and spent the day trying to get everything ready for visitors.

The scenic drive was still closed because trees were blocking the road. The park expects to open the drive tomorrow morning.

During the shutdown the park lost out on revenue from entrance fees that help fund projects.

The deputy park superintendent said they started calling employees back at 5:30 this morning.

"Our top priority was getting things open for the visitors and of course the natural resource staff can now resume their projects, the historic resource staff can resume their projects, everybody's glad to get back to work," said Deputy Park Superintendent Tom Ulrich.

Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have more on how the budget deal is impacting the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
