Detroit's Belle Isle Closer To Becoming MI State Park

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) -- Belle Isle is closer to becoming a state park.

The Detroit City Council is meeting Friday about the nearly thousand acre park in the middle of the Detroit River.

A special council session was scheduled for Friday morning.

Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr and Governor Rick Snyder signed a 30 year lease earlier this month that would make the island a state park.

The deal is expected to save the city more than $6 million each year.

The state would invest between $10 million to $20 million over the first three years and charge an admission fee.
