S.S. Badger Will Continue Sailing For Years

Posted: Updated:

The SS Badger will continue to sail for many years to come.

A federal district judge signed a consent decree Thursday that allows the Badger to continue to operate between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

It is the only coal-powered car ferry sailing the Great Lakes.

Dumping several tons of ash into Lake Michigan daily was an environmental concern.

The owners changed the process recently. Now the Badger will hold the ash on board instead of dumping it.

The badger will continue to retain ash until the 2015 sailing season, while making other changes.

The decree went out for public opinion in March, then was approved by the EPA in September.
