Some Northern Michigan Apple Farmers Looking for Extra Workers

Posted: Updated:

Northern Michigan apple farmers are racing to finish the harvest but many are still looking for extra help.

After the dismal crop last year, orchards are counting on a great harvest.

The owner of Rennie Orchards near Williamsburg say he could still use three to five more workers.

He has harvested about 70 percent of the crop but some other farmers are behind and say they do not have enough people to catch up. Time is running out each day the apples hang unpicked on the trees.

"The risk is they'll blow off and fall on the ground and the value drops off to almost minimal," said apple farmer Sandy Rennie.

Some farmers use workers from local vineyards but they will be needed soon to harvest grapes.

Kyle Mitchell and Photojournalist Tony Zyber have more on the apple harvest and the demand for workers.
